WebMost likely it's because only one barrel can be used at a time by a single stockpile. Only one job being generated = only one dwarf collecting food in a barrel = food production outpacing food storage. The best thing to do is to split the single stockpile into many smaller ones; that way, more than one dwarf will be hauling food at a time. The result is a mass cancellation of jobs whenever it happens, its very annoying and it slows down any industry you have. The only real fix is to use a quantum stockpile, an exploit that allow you to store an infinite amount of items on one tile.
